Colas Surfix 70% Hot Bitumen Spray

As Surfix is an emulsion of bitumen in water, it has a huge range of advantages over standard anhydrous binders, first and foremost the lower temperature of application (80° to 90°C) poses significantly less risk of damage should any accidents occur, as well as the lower risk of fire.
Furthermore the wetting and adhesion to chippings and road surfaces is excellent, it is more tolerant to dusty chippings and lightly coated chippings are never required or indeed recommended, the higher residual viscosity in the early life of the dressing provides a greater resistance to traffic stresses, the stabilised dressing is less prone to flushing up in hot weather conditions and it is more ‘user-friendly’.

When heating is taking place please ensure that the binder is well circulated and does not surpass 90°C.
Surfix C should be applied at the correct rate of spread to the road surface by calibrated spray tankers to conform to BS1707 (Hot Binder Distributors for Surface Dressing).
The surface dressing works should be in accordance with the recommendations contained in Road Note 39 and the Road Surface Dressing Associations Code of Practice and Guidance Notes. As a guide, rates of spread are generally in agreement with Road Note 39, Chippings must be uncoated, of good quality, dust free and conforming to BS EN13043.
